A jackline is a safety line for sailors (jacks) that is typically run from the bow of a ship to the stern, and it allows a tether to be quickly attached so that a sailor can move safely about the deck during heavy seas.
Double jacklines are made so that a safety strap can be run down each side of a vessel.
Originally, a jackline was made of either rope or wire, but the round shape can interfere with footing on the deck, so today's jacklines are constructed of incredibly strong webbing that lays flat and makes it easier to move about a deck. Also, the bright yellow or light blue color of the flat web makes it very easy to see in the dark. Above is a comparison chart of stocked jacklines, some of which are pre-made with a karabiner (or, carbine hook) at one end for rapid deployment at the first sign of heavy weather.
