A great marine head is one that does not break when the seas are heavy, forcing you to go below in a rolling and pitching boat, and fix the head while your crew waits impatiently for their turn on the porcelain throne. Actually, there's never a good time for a marine toilet (or head) to break, so make sure that whatever size boat you own, that you choose a marine loo that will always be reliable and dependable. You will never regret it. And, neither will your crew.

Why is the marine toilet on a boat called the "head"? According to marine legend, old square-rigged sailing ships had seats on either side on the bowsprit in the "head" of the ship because the wind usually blew from the stern (which blew the odors away from the ship). Also, water splashed up in the bow to wash things down and keep the area clean. There was also a prohibition on many ships that prevented the crew from setting foot on the deck aft of the mainmast, but they had free roam of the "head" of a ship. But whatever the reason, marine toilets are still referred to as "heads" to this day.
