Be certain to buy a chain stopper (chain snubber) that matches the chain that you will use because it is essential to take the load off the chain and windlass whenever your boat is laying at anchor or when the anchor is fully raised and put into its stowed position.

Some Maxwell windlasses are combination rope/chain models that are configured to haul both types in a single rode. A capstan (a.k.a. drum or warping drum) is used to individually haul rope, so adding a capstan makes it possible to use the windlass for heavy lifting, such as hoisting a main halyard when you are single-handling a large sail. A gypsy (a.k.a. chainwheel or wildcat) is used for chain and must be matched to the size of desired chain.
