A French revolution in winch design has come ashore to the Americas. Pontos Americas is proud to be a partner with Pontos in the U.S., Caribbean, and South and Central America. Winner of the 2014 SAIL Magazine Pittman Award for Innovation, the Grinder and Trimmer Four-Speed Winches are faster and more powerful than all other winches on the market--and affordable--a boon to racers and cruisers alike.
Raising a mainsail is almost child's play with the Trimmer. Fast sheeting around the leeward mark to get to windward before the rest of the fleet has never been easier with the Grinder. Furl and sheet faster with the Compact.
When you're climbing a hill on your bike you reach for the lower gears to reduce the effort on your straining body Now you can have the same kind of relief for your shoulders and upper body by using the Trimmer Winch. The Trimmer has a geared-down advantage that takes the strain off while you're hauling up your mainsail or cranking in your genoa in heavy air. Extra gears mean less work for you, with no extra buttons or complicated maneuvers, just by reversing the winch handle direction. The ease with which you can wind in a heavily loaded sheet is truly astonishing with the Trimmer.
Tacking will never be the same. The Grinder patented four-speed winch allows you to let off the old sheet during a tack and sheet in the new sheet quicker than two could perform the operation with a standard two-speed winch. The Grinder is that revolutionary--it changes how you tack: preload the new winch and crank. It's that simple and quick. The first revolution of the winch brings in over two feet of line--an astonishing feat. Reverse the direction for more power. Repeat twice, gaining more power each time.
They look innocent enough. In fact they look almost identical to other two-speed winches, but that's where the similarity ends. Pontos four-speed winches revolutionize the winch operation by use of a clutch and trigger mechanism that allows seamless and intuitive--with a simple change of direction in the winch handle--engagement of two extra gears. The patented trigger mechanism moves up and down in the drum housing to engage the clutch; as load decreases the clutch automatically moves back down. This clutch system provides two additional speeds. In the Grinder those speeds are put to use to provide faster line handling; in the Trimmer those gears are used to provide more power for the same winch size when handling lines.
