          Description

Scanstrut's Self-Levelling Radar Mount attaches 18" and 24" radar antennas to the backstay mount of Garmin, Raymarine and Simrad (DX45 & DX60) and ensures your radar stays level with the horizon at all times for optimum antenna performance. As the boat heels or rolls, the radar is kept horizontal preventing target loss and giving the best possible radar picture.

          Features:

          • Aluminum mounting pole with integral groove for up to three antenna cables
          • High strength universal base for mounting pole, fits any surface. All torque loads are transmitted through the deck with only negligible load through the backstay
          • Supplied with integral bushes, to suit backstays from 6mm to 14mm diameter
          • Automatic levelling system, ensures perfect radar picture at all times
          • Hydraulic damping, eliminates minor oscillations
          • Sealed damping chamber, entirely maintenance free
          • Passive system, no power required
          • Lightweight head unit, reduced weight aloft
          • Stainless Steel radome cradle with fine tune adjustment for backstay angle

Note: Radome and backstay not included.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well made, but may take extra work for mounting A very well designed and engineered item. The Scanstrut company made a helpful installation video, which was adequate but could be improved. My wife and I got it up with an 18 inch Raymarine Quanum2 in a day, then penetrated the deck, ran the cables (power and data) forward to the nav station, and had the radar running the next day. The Scanstrut functions as advertised, and installing it instead of a mast mounted radar saved us at least $1K for boatyard mast removal. The only reason I took off one star was that it is assembled with about a dozen small set screws that could have easily bounced off the deck and overboard. A few extras should have been included. The instructions need some work too. No words, just pictures. I found that some pre-assembly of the swivel assembly is needed in an order not in sequence with the picture instructions. Also, the bottom mount of the strut needs redesign. I spent some time studying the bottom mounting bracket online trying to imagine how to fit it to my boat, and thought I'd be okay, but once in hand, I could see that modification would be required. Re- drilling the bolt hole holding the strut needed a carbide bit to get through the stainless steel, and the two fore&aft bolt holes on the bottom seemed inadequate. It should also have athwartship mounting holes as well for future years of side loading when the boat heels. I thought of going to a welder to beef it up, but instead opted for drilling two smaller side by side holes within the bracket to add a couple of #10 screws into the toe rail where it had to be located. These are small issues (one star worth), even though I am very happy with the overall design, the sleek look, and the savings. Defender packaged it well and UPS ground had it across the country in 5 days. Great service.
