What is AIS: The Automatic Identification System ( AIS ) improves the safety level of boating by exchanging information about the status of your ship with other AIS-equipped craft nearby. The system utilizes VHF broadcasts to handle information about the surrounding area, such as other craft and buoys and other aids-to-navigation. The AIS data includes target position, course and speed over ground, allowing you to foresee the course changes of particular targets. AIS targets are constantly visible even when they are shrouded in fog, in darkness, behind headlands, river bends or other obstructions. - Class A AIS is designed for Commercial and SOLAS Vessels
- Class "A" transponders used on commercial ships and SOLAS vessels have many advanced features not needed by recreational users making them expensive
- Class B AIS is designed for use on non-SOLAS craft
- The class "B" standard offers all the visibility and benefits of the class "A" without the complications.
* NOTE - AIS target range, like VHF range is dependent upon a number of installation factors such as; antenna gain, antenna height and size of ground plane. Ranges in excess of 20 miles should be possible if all of these factors are perfect.
