RADAR is a system or technique for determining the position and movement of a remote object by means of radio waves reflected from its surface. Most radar units use radio waves in the microwave range, but the basic principle of RADAR is not limited to any one particular frequency or range of frequencies. Some radars operate on frequencies that are well below 100 megahertz (megacycles), while others operate in the infrared range and above. The term RADAR is an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging, but the term also denotes any device that implements the technique.

A radar dome (or, radome) describes a self-contained device that emanates RADAR waves without exposed moving parts, while an "open array" describes a larger unit that sweeps a much larger arc, which tends to be more accurate than a smaller dome. However, an open array requires more space and must be allowed to openly rotate, so they are more suitable for larger boats.
