Kurt has been in the marine industry as a buyer and store manager for about 25 years and he’s been boating for 35+ years on everything from Star Craft ski boats to an Ericson 27 that he owned for nine years.
"We’d take it to Block Island and the Vineyard or cruise around Newport and Narragansett Bay," he said. "That was my summer — until the kids arrived." He’s in a center console now with another sailboat on the horizon.
Kurt was a store manager for West Marine for a few years before coming to Defender in 1999.
"I think people come here for our experience and knowledge. We have experienced boaters here who buy smart, which allows us to sell to the consumer at a fair price," he said.
"The biggest advantage we have, I think, is our stock. People are shocked that they can leave here with a refrigerator or a 50-pound anchor," he said.
Kurt’s specialty as a Product Manager is in sail hardware, paints and epoxies. He said Defender is large enough to meet the needs of a broad range of boaters, yet retains that personal touch that allows staff to work with customers to make sure their needs are met.
