Larry is a boater through and through. Like most who grew up on the shoreline, he’s been messing around in boats since his childhood. As an adult he’s owned at least five that he can remember.
Taking advantage of the abundant fishing grounds and destinations in and around Long Island, Fishers Island and Block Island sounds, Larry is an avid fisherman. From his slip on the Thames River in New London he’ll head out to Montauk or Block Island or keep it closer and fish Watch Hill Reef and the other reefs between Fishers Island, N.Y., and the Connecticut and Rhode Island coasts.
He’s currently in a 28-foot Master Marine center console and enjoys chatting with customers about their projects since he does just about all his own work.
"Unless it’s something crazy, I’ll do it," he said. He rebuilt a 1977 30-foot Sisu Down Easter that was in need of some updating and general care. He replaced the decking and hatch and generally transformed it from a lobster boat to a fishing boat.
"I can talk to customers about just about anything they need help with and we have enough knowledge here so if I don’t know something I can ask one of the other guys," he said. "We tag team a lot."
Larry has worked at Defender for six years and said he sees a good amount of repeat business.
"If you’ve been here a while you see customers come in again and again," he said. "They know they can ask questions here. It’s not just boating ‘stuff’ here, there’s lots of knowledge here too."
