Rob grew up sailing dinghies, windsurfing and operating various runabouts. His interest in sailing and nautical history led him to a semester at sea aboard the schooner Harvey Gamage and later to the purchase of a 27-foot Cape Dory that he cruised in and around Long Island Sound. Today, Rob "cruises" around with his two children in a 17-foot Daysailer dubbed the "Water Wagon."
"My father instilled a love for small boat sailing and being around the water at a young age," Rob said. They sailed together along the (Connecticut) shoreline and in Maine. "When my sister and I were old enough, my dad bought us a Sunfish and I spent countless hours on it during the summers." Later he joined his high school sailing team and a local small boat club on the lower Connecticut River from which he sailed his 18-foot Hobie Cat.
During college he sailed on the Hudson River at Marist College in New York and was president of the sailing club. During his semester aboard the Harvey Gamage he sailed from St. Thomas to various stops in the Caribbean, including the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic before sailing up the East Coast to Greenport, N.Y.
Rob has been with Defender since 2004 and is a member of the Contact Center where he has worked as a sales associate / outfitter and has helped customers with orders for standing rigging and lifelines. He now focuses on international orders and customer service issues. He said he finds that customers appreciate Defender’s focus on prompt service and a well-stocked warehouse.
