Selecting the Right Boat Anchor, Dock and Marine Lines

Of all the marine ropes aboard a boat, some of the most important are your anchor and docking lines.
These ropes must be sturdy and trustworthy since they keep your boat from drifting away.
When you drop anchor, you need to know that the line connecting it to your boat won't fail during even the heaviest seas.
A boat anchor rope that fails during the night can potentially endanger more than just your boat!

Similarly, docking lines keep your boat where you leave it.
Sturdy boat dock ropes prevent your boat from becoming a hazard in a busy waterway.
Properly used dock lines also absorb the shock that can damage a boat in a slip.
Protect your dock lines by using chafe guards that prevent the rubbing and chafing that is the downfall of so many ropes that are under load.

Anchor and Docking Line at Defender

At Defender, we carry a variety of sizes and types of ropes suitable as anchor and docking lines.
We carry (and highly recommend) nylon for its superior traits.
It is durable, strong, flexible, and stretchy enough to absorb shocks.
It also resists mold, mildew, and aquatic organisms that try to grow on it.

All of our ropes are available by the foot, so you can get the amount you need for your particular boat:
  • Our 3-strand plaited rope is easy to splice, useful for many applications, and affordable. It is also lightweight and easy to handle.
  • Choose 8-strand plaited rope when you need superior strength, durability, and shock absorption.
  • Nylon double braid is the strongest rope we carry, with approximately half the stretch of 3-strand nylon. It offers excellent abrasion resistance even when wet.

  • For every 9' feet of boat length, it requires a line diameter of approximately 1/8", so a 27' boat requires a rope that is at least 3/8" in diameter.
Remember, these are minimum diameters. You should definitely consider bumping the diameter size up for safety purposes, especially for anchor lines.
